Place reservation for The paintings of L.S. Lowry : oils and watercoloursMervyn Levy, the art critic and commentator, has been one of the few individuals in recent years to have gained both the respect and friendship of L. S. Lowry. Thus Mr Levy is particularly suited to present this full and detailed study of the artist and his background. All of Mr Lowry's major canvases are reproduced, many in colour, and these together with the wide selection of other works (several having been known hitherto only to the artist and his buyer) go to make The Paintings of L. S. Lowry: Oils and Watercolours the most comprehensive monograph on the artist yet published. The selection of paintings, chosen by Mr Levy in consultation with the artist, includes not only many examples of the industrial landscapes for which L. S. Lowry is chiefly acclaimed, but also the rarer portraits, seascapes, still lifes and pastoral studies. Included too are several representative canvases from Mr Lowry's ventures into the impressionistic and surreal, canvases which combine vastly differing approaches with the same characteristic vision.
