Illustrations: Ballater Bridge. Built 1807-1809, the spans are 34, 55, 60,55, 34 ft. A good example of masonry construction may be inspected when the river is low as here, right under the arches. The hollow wall technique was used in constructing the spandrels of the arches, thus reducing weight on the piers while maintaining the strength - Aberdeen Harbour: Telford extended and rebuilt the earlier breakwater seen across the channel in the photograph and made other significant improvements - Banff Harbour: Telford worked at Banff from 1806 to 1823, but the main work was carried out between 1814-9. The earlier small harbour was better protected by the large stone pier seen in the distance in the photograph. Here also the construction of the harbour made an immense difference to the local fishermen.Text illustrations: This drawing fromTelford's Atlas shows something of the constructional methods used at Aberdeen. The cranes are quite advanced for their time, although still relying on strong arm-power for lifting even the heaviest blocks. The arrangement of the masonry courses so as to resist the wave action in the best possible manner is plainly seen. Telford worked on improvements to Aberdeen harbour for many years, interspersed with pauses while more funds were found. He was adviser from 1801 until his death. The first phase of improvements (1809 - 18) was the extension of Smeaton's pier and the construction of the south breakwater. The second phase (1829 - 34) included making a new channel for the Dee, new wet docks and quays and extensive dredging.Previous Control Number: 0715359339.ALSO CLASSIFIED AT 624.0924.Previous Locations: ACC, CSES, IG.
