Piero della Francesca was one of the greatest Italian painters of the 15th century. He spent much of his life in his native town of Sansepolcro, but he also worked in some of the major art centres of the day, including Florence, Rome and Urbino, and his largest surviving work - a noble series of frescoes on the Legend of the True Cross - is in Arezzo.
