In 1470 Thomas Ker of Smailhom, the son of Sir Andrew Ker of Cessford built a stone tower at Ferniehirst deep in the Forest of Jedwood overlooking the Jed Water. Dand Ker, his oldest son, determined to establish the Ferniehirst Kers as a Grayne distinct from their Cessford cousins acquired power and lands in the hills and valleys of Teviotdale, making powerful friends and enemies on both sides of the borderline.
