Old Lilliesleaf, Ashkirk and Midlem

Books, Manuscripts
Nestling in the delightful Scottish Borders and pretty well untouched by the Industrial Revolution or the railway age, these charming rural villages have always been photogenic. That aspect has made for a great book with village life 100 years ago photographed in depth, mainly by the photographers Robert Clapperton and A.R. Edwards, both of nearby Selkirk. For image quality this is possibly the best Stenlake book of this type. The photographs here include curling on the frozen Moss, unveiling of the war memorial, the Buccleuch Hunt, men scything hay, a horse sleigh in the winter snow, the rifle club, road-mending and the Lothian & Border Horse.
