The author relates Scotland's history to the clans. He tells the story of many of the major clans and tartans : the romantic myth surrounding the origins of the tartans and their development as a means of clan identity ; the destruction of the clan system and the defeat of the Jacobites in 1746 ; the banning of tartans on pain of imprisonment or transportation overseas ; and their revival as a result of George IV's visit to Scotland in 1822 and subsequent connections with Royalty. The book includes 150 tartans in full color with historical origins of clans and plaids with 150 full-color illustrations.
