Summary

Although not the largest of the border counties, Berwickshire contained some of the largest landed estates and was home to some of the most famous and influential families in Scottish history, including the Homes, Maitlands, and Douglasses to name just a few. The architectural legacy of these families was great and while some great houses were lost, many remain. Most are featured in this book, including Ayton Castle, Bemersyde House, Duns Castle, The Hirsel, Manderston House, Mellerstain, and Thirlestane Castle, along with many other small houses, towers, and ruins.
