Riders of Deseret

Coolidge, Dane, 1873-19402016
Large Print
Lieutenant Zachary Tarrant is cashiered out of the U.S. Army for his involvement with Tamar Young, the daughter of Mormon leader Brigham Young. Tarrant was unaware that Tamar is actually the third wife of Hyrum Paine, secretary to Brigham Young. His one hope for reinstatement is to accept an assignment as a government spy, to go to the Mormon city of Moroni and gather evidence on Bishop Lot Drake who, thirty years before, was responsible for the massacre of 120 Gentile emigrants at Mountain Meadows. At Moroni, Tarrant finds Drake but also Ammon Clark, captain of the Avenging Angels, a grim militia organised for the purpose of protecting the lives and property of Mormons from any threat. The Mormons declared their State of Deseret in what the U.S. Congress has declared Utah Territory to be independent from the United States and not subject to its laws.
