Bogan finds in Bruce Whittle likely material for his business. Whittle is in Bogan's view a romantic fool who is suicidal because he has lost the one woman in all the world. Bogan persuades Whittle to become a member of the Foreign Legion, under General Montalo. By his courage and recklessness, Whittle impresses Bogan and a singular friendship is forged. In the important attack on Fronteras, Bogan and Whittle agree to burn bridges and destroy railroad communications. To help them in this venture General Montalo promises to surround the city and cut off pursuit by the Federal forces. Only Bogan and Whittle discover that they are suddenly without this promised assistance and, instead, are pursued by Federal cavalry from Fronteras. The two are surrounded.
